Fall Flea :: Monday October 3rd through Sunday October 16th

Seasonal decorating of private homes + gatherings is my passion. I have even been told that creating personalized environments is my “special gift”. I LOVE it and intend to keep creating these for my clients but I started thinking…

Why keep all the good stuff to myself?

Why not share my seasonal finds with my online community so you can add personalized touches to your home too?

Well you have by now I am sure, heard about my Seasonal Home Box which is available 4 times a year ~ that will continue to be available, not to worry. But I wanted more. I wanted another opportunity to share my finds, especially my one of a kind finds, with you each season. For you to benefit from the hours I spend scouting seasonal trends and in the stores.

I am excited to announce my first virtual pop-up market, the #FallFlea!

For two weeks this Fall – Monday October 3rd through Sunday October 16th – you can shop the virtual pop-up market from your desk, train or couch! For two weeks only you will be able to purchase fall decor items from my personal collection, recent finds and new arrivals. There will be items for your home, table, and gatherings – all decor that I use in my own home, on client projects or simply a piece I couldn’t resist!

Items will be very limited, with some only having one in stock, so if you see something you must have add it to your cart ASAP before another market goer grabs it.

What do you have to do to be a part of the #FallFlea virtual pop-up market?

Mark your calendar and get on The List for updates and announcements leading up to and during the Fall Flea.SIGN ME UP

And of course be sure to share your #FALLFLEA finds on Instagram + Facebook for a chance to win a $50 gift card that can be used during the #WINTERFLEA!

Gardening: What is a Topiary?

Topiary Quote #GardenTip @AnAppealingPlan

topiary     noun    (Concise Encyclopedia)

Art of training living trees and shrubs into artificial, decorative shapes. Topiary is known to have been practiced in the 1st century AD. The earliest topiary was probably the simple development of edgings, cones, columns, and spires to accent a garden scene. This architectural use gave way to elaborate shapes such as ships, hunters, and hounds. The fashion reached its height in Britain in the late 17th and early 18th century but was displaced by the so-called natural garden.

Use Lanterns To Add Warmth to Your Thanksgiving Entranceway

I love to use lanterns to decorate a Fall or Thanksgiving entranceway. The flickering candle light to lights the way for Thanksgiving guests and adds warmth to any Fall Entranceway.

You may already have a lantern or two at home, bring them out from storage, or you may need to head out and grab one or two, either way I promise that adding the warm glow of candle light to your walk way and front entranceway will add a special touch.

I always look for wood or metal versions that can be mixed together or a pair that can sit on either side of the doorway. Don’t worry too much about getting matchy-matchy, Fall is the perfect season to mix metal and materials to create a personalized look for your Thanksgiving entranceway.

Of course safety comes first – Ensure the flame is far from dry leaves or corn stalks and fully enclosed in the lantern is even better!

Decorating Christmas Garland with Burlap Ribbon

Decorating Christmas garland with ribbon is easy and a nice way to personalize it for your decor needs. Garland can be used around doorways, but it can be also used on a mantel above a bookcase, or perhaps along a buffet if you’re entertaining.

Click the image to start the video or if the image does not appear click here.

In this video for eHow, I discuss how to  decorate Christmas garland with ribbon. Click the image above or click here to start the video.

You may have plain green garland that you would like to decorate, and you want to add a little bit of pizzazz, this project is perfect for you.

Start with 5 yards of ribbon or even a runner will work. Start with one end, leaving a few inches of ribbon before you make your first tie.

Instead of using floral wire, use the pieces of the garland to wrap around the ribbon. Start to move down, bunching the ribbon so you have nice volume and movement. Do not tie  it too tight onto the garland. Keep moving down this length of garland and adding these pieces.

Once you have done the entire length of that one garland, come back and add a second layer. And this is where you can really have a little bit more fun. In this video I use a red shimmery ribbon, but you can use any color, or you could leave it plain like this, you could use this more as a woodland rustic Christmas decoration.

Layer it on, again, leave that same length at the end.

You could also use garland to decorate your children’s room, using polka dots, or maybe tin soldier patterned ribbon.

Decorating the Front Door for Thanksgiving Harvest

In this video for eHow I discuss how to decorate the Front Door for Thanksgiving or Harvest Dinner. This is something you can easily do even  if you live in an apartment.

how to decorate the doorway for thanksgiving ehow #FallDecor #AnAppealingPlan final

Decorating your front door for Thanksgiving  and harvest is an easy seasonal decorating project you can do to bring the Fall & Harvest season to your entranceway. If your entranceway is smaller this is perfect for you!

You may live in an apartment,  or may not have a lot of room near your entrance way. There are still things that you can do to decorate the entrance way  to make a very festive for your Thanksgiving or your harvest dinner.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
  • Large Heirloom Gourds. If you find large gourds at your local maybe your  pumpkin patch. Maybe your farmer’s market or your corner store may have some of  these heirloom varieties. I find they actually  last longer then some of the conventional large orange ones that you may find. I use these right from the beginning of October on through  Thanksgiving. These varieties come in many, many different  colors. Blue which I love. And then some of the different  green ones, and Mexican hat variety. And really, really brings a lot of  different texture and variety to the door if you are able to find a really nice  selection.
  • Indian Corn
  • Basket with a Variety of Gourds.
  • If you don’t have a door where you can place a wreath, a sign is nice. You  can just prop that up really nicely. Maybe put a little pumpkin in front of  that.
  • Stalks of Wheat. We can just tuck those in. And if  you keep them to the side they really shouldn’t interfere with too much with the  in and out of the doorway.
  • Preserved Leaves in various colors. Tuck them in around the larger gourds. Just giving it an effect. If you have a beautiful maple tree outside go and clip those. However, if you live in an apartment this  is a great opportunity to use some of the preserved leaves that you may find in  your craft store.
  • White Pumpkins.  Leaning and stacking them in a little bit of an angle.

Seasonal Cut Greens Bring Color to Your Entranceway Containers

Winter temperatures and cloudy skies can leave garden containers looking less than attractive. Placing cut greens like such as Pine boughs and Magnolia trimmings along with Red Dogwood branches, and Pinecones will add life and texture until they can be replanted.

Most will be available in your yard but if not, head to a farmers market or inquire at a local nursery for a source.
