I don’t know about you but I LOVE mini pumpkins and gourds of all kinds so while I have the chance to decorating the table with Autumn gourds I take every opportunity to do just that!

Start setting your Fall tablescape by lining the center of the table with mixed gourds, Indian Corn and a Succulent Pumpkin Centerpiece or two. There really isn’t a wrong way to group them. Pick out a variety of shapes and sizes ~ I promise they will all look perfect together!

Once I have my centerpiece in place I like to add a textured charger, a main serving plate and a fall leaf plate at each placesetting. Continuing adding seasonal elements  like a grapevine napkin ring around a natural linen napkin.

The stress of hosting can be overwhelming. No matter if it is your first time hosting, Or your 10th. My ULTIMATE Thanksgiving checklist is HERE to make you look like an entertaining pro. Download yours for all my seasonal entertaining must-haves.

Spiked Pumpkin Rice Pudding for October Unprocessed

For the second year in a row I am a proud contributor to October Unprocessed. A month long pledge created by Andrew Wilder of EatingRules.com to reduce the amount of processed food we consume. This year however, pushed my knowledge of processed versus unprocessed AND my comfort level in the kitchen to new levels as I created first a Baked Sweet Dumpling Squash with Pumpkin Custard and then recipe #2…. Bourbon Pumpkin Rice Pudding.

bourbon-pumpkin-rice-pudding-for-october-unprocessed-by-kraylfunch-1

Yes, you heard correctly. I ended up creating two recipes but only one was fit to be published during October Unprocessed 2016. Why you might ask?

Turns out there is an entire FAQ on sugar, how it is processed, which sugars are considered the least processed and why we should/or should not consume them. I thought I was doing the right thing by using brown sugar {and the folks at Bob’s Red Mill consumer team have provided me thorough information regarding how they are using the best possible methods to create their line of sugars} but other companies may or may not have your best health in mind so please be sure to learn more about this topic HERE.

See how my Bourbon Pumpkin Rice Pudding turn out, my lessons learned in the kitchen and take the October Unprocessed pledge HERE.

My New York Post Instagram Article Feature!

“I GOT AN INSTA MAKEOVER”. That’s how the title reads of my first ever mention in the New York Post from last Thursday’s center page spread in an article discussing how Instagram users, like my self, are finding ways to up their Instagram game and make the most of this visual platform.

The New York Post Instagram Article featuring Krayl Funch of @KraylFunch instagram account p37 square

The New York Post Instagram article reads – “Entertaining Expert Krayl Funch has made a name for herself for her artful tabletop compositions on Instagram … Her after photo contained a story about beverage stations in the caption, nearly 30 hashtags about home decor and summer entertaining and earned an impressive 100 likes and 15 comments.”

It features two images from my Instagram account,  a “BEFORE” picture posted in 2015 as well as an “AFTER” picture from a recent posting. The contrast shows the difference in how I have recently changed my approach to the content I am now sharing on my account to be more deliberate and thoughtful. I take the time to consider how the entire feed looks as a story and how they all relate to create a mini online magazine, my increase in followers and engagement proves others like what I am doing!

The article also featured several Instagram consultants discussing Instagram tips to turn you into a social-media star, and bloggers quotes on what they have done to improve their Instagram engagement.

The response to the New York Post Instagram article has been fabulous. Thank you everyone for your support and kind words! I invite you all to come over and say hello in my Instagram feed, and be sure to say hi.

Fresh Eats Radio Guest Feature

I love twitter. I can’t help it. I know it may not be the best use of my time and in fact I frequently can’t believe how fast an hour can pass by when I simply log on to answer a question, or retweet something I like. However, in those lost hours are moments of solid gold. Real personal connections happening in the fast as lighting 140 character world – just recently this happened to me.

Through a friends {yes a real life friend} twitter stream I shared or commented on a person’s post and we started a dialog there on twitter. To learn more about her, I clicked on her website link in her profile and after searching around a bit I find out the she lives only 30 minutes from me! This mysterious person was/is Heather Rampolla, Host of Fresh Eats Radio and a Wellness Coach.

Listen in on our conversation here.

Fast forward and guess who is a featured guest on Heather’s Fresh Eats Radio show this month? You guessed it ME! During our conversation we talked about intentional living, getting family help in the kitchen when they don’t want to, seasonal ways to dress up your counter top and you guessed it, my favorite topic – how to celebrate everyday. Listen in on our conversation here.

The other day I was invited to come on as a guest to Food Talk Radio 820 AM – recently named Best Local Foodie Radio Show by Creative Loafing – to talk about cooking, entertaining, tablescapes and yes my favorite topic … the importance of celebrating everyday.

ABOUT KIM BAILEY

Kim loves food and has been entertaining all his life…which is why he began a catering firm 14 years ago and subsequently opened Bailey’s restaurant in Old Hyde Park and Davis Island to wide acclaim with many local celebrities naming it one of their “top 3” restaurants in the Tampa Bay area, and earned high ratings on social media websites like Yelp and Urbanspoon.

While southern cuisine is Kim’s forte, there is no dish, or region that he will not explore. His enjoyment of food was further enhanced when he studied the French language at the University of Dijon, Dijon, France – where he fell in absolute love with Dijon Mustard! After his success with the 2012 Republican National Convention where Bailey’s was selected as a premiere caterer, Kim decided to sell Bailey’s Restaurant to concentrate on catering and his new consulting firm Restaurant & Catering Concepts.

Holiday Decor Feature in Tampa Bay Metro Magazine

Tampa Bay Metro Joy of Entertaining cover

Recently  I worked with Tampa Bay METRO Magazine to put together The Joy of Entertaining decor feature for the November/December 2014 Issue – you might recall my Posh New Year’s Chic table for two was featured last year. I was able to narrowed it down to 5 of my favorite tables for Fall + Holiday, from there we still needed to bring it down to only 3! Luckily I didn’t have to make the final cut, I love them all equally! Ronda Parag, Publisher and Managing Editor, selected her top 3 for the final spread – 2 fall tablescapes {fresh from being featured in the new book} and one never before released client holiday table. If you are in the area be sure to pick up a copy and let us know which one is your favorite!

Oscar de la Renta: The Value of a Life Lived Well

Although the majority of my posts revolve around entertaining, interior design, seasonal decorating, etc… I am personally and professionally {as are many home + event stylists} inspired by the world of fashion, so the news of the passing of Oscar de la Renta was more than saddening to me. De la Renta impacted style for over 50 years and will be remembered in history as one of the greats.

"Be the designer of your own destiny..." #OscardelarRenta Quotes via @AnAppealingPlan

“Be the designer of your own destiny…” Oscar de la Renta

On Monday October 20th Oscar de la Renta, the worldly gentleman designer who shaped the wardrobe of socialites and Hollywood stars for more than four decades, died at the age of 82.

De la Renta died at home Monday evening in Connecticut surrounded by family and friends and “more than a few dogs,” according to a handwritten statement signed by two of his company’s executives, Alex Bolen and Eliza Bolen.

While de la Renta’s primary home was in Manhattan, he also kept a home in the Dominican Republic and regularly traveled there. Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour was a frequent visitor and she has said traveling with him was like traveling with the president. “He’s a superstar,” she said.

“Gardening is the work of a lifetime. You never finish.” Oscar de la Renta

He also had a country home in northwestern Connecticut. Gardening and dancing were among his favorite diversions from work. “I’m a very restless person. I’m always doing something. The creative process never stops,” he said.  {quotes credit of Newsday + Associated Press}

Below are a few of my favorite quotes from Oscar de la Renta. A gentleman who knew the value that beauty and design plays in our lives, that by surrounding ourselves with things that make us feel lovely {be it clothes, within your home or in your garden}, we feel better about ourselves and are able spread this joy onto others.

" We live in an era of globalization and the era of the women. Never in the history of the world have women been more in control of their destiny." #OscardelaRenta #Quotes via @KraylFunch @AnAppealingPlan

"Fashion is a trend. Style is within a person." #OscardelaRenta via @KraylFunch @AnAppealingPlan

“Fashion is a trend. Style is within a person.” Oscar de la Renta

Wintour shares a story about de la Renta’s relationship with his wife Annette: “Oscar was everything you could want a friend to be. Annette was his perfect partner, creating those magical houses and gardens together, giving extraordinary seemingly effortless dinners, and always taking care of each other.”

We can all only hope we have left such a mark after we are no longer here. Be creative, bring beauty to the world and spend time with loved ones ~ make the most of your days connecting with your surrounding and others.

In three words…what do you hope others remember about you? Share them in the comments and move towards that goal everyday.

What’s Your Favorite Position? Feng Shui for the Bedroom Design

I was recently interviewed for a news series that aired on FOX News called “Launch Your Libido”, with Dr Jo and Board Certified Clinical Sexologist Dr. Dae Sheridan regarding the ideal design for your bedroom as it relates to your relationship. We talked about color choices, fabrics + pillows, candles, a mixture of materials and also the placement and position of your furniture with in your room. And of course, since it was a “libido” focused series we naturally focused on the bed as the main furniture in the room.

Now although in this article I am specifically discussing the bedroom, these philosophies can apply to your garden, dinning room and all your entertaining spaces, creating environments for you and your guests to feel their best and happiest. {more to come in future articles so be sure to sign up for updates to your inbox here.}

Feng Shui, which literally translates to “wind and water”, is the ancient Chinese art of placement.

At its most basic level, feng shui {pronounced fung shway} can be used as a decorating discipline based on the belief that our surroundings affect us mentally and emotionally in many ways. Whether it is applied to the entire house as it relates to the land, the furniture in the room or specific objects, according to Feng Shui, the position of these items can have an effect on your chi or Qi, frequently translated as “natural energy”, “life force”, or “energy flow”.

Feng Shui Bedroom image #LaunchYourLibido #AnAppealingPlan

In feng shui, the first “commanding position” for the bed is its relation to the door and it’s distance from the door. Ideally position it as far away from the bedroom door as possible, but which still allows for the most control over the space and in turn your life. The corner of the room diagonally opposite the door is usually best {but you must use a headboard to choose this placement}, or against the wall furthest away from the door, but not in-line with the doorway.

Additional considerations when positioning your bed according to feng shui are windows, beams and bed access.

Try not to position your bed under the lower angle of a pitched roof, a ceiling fan or a heavy beam. These elements are thought to contain “depressing energy” that pushes down on you while you sleep. If you can not work around these architectural features, a bed canopy or fabric suspended from the ceiling are believed to be “cures” for the situation.

feng-shui-bed-positions via @AnAppealingPlan #design #interiordesign

{image by feng shui by angel}

Avoid positioning your bed under a window, which lacks the “support and protection” of a solid wall and can lead to a poor night’s sleep as energy enters and exits through the window.

Headboards, especially solid versions made from wood or fabric, are considered good feng shui because they provide additional strength and support behind your head. Footboards, on the other hand, are seen as blocking energy and your forward progress in life.

The Big No-No In Feng Shui Bed Placement

Make sure your feet do not point out the door while laying in bed! Traditional Chinese culture, refers to this as the “Death Position” because the deceased are carried out feet first to their coffins and believe sleeping this way can drain your life force. In Feng shui terms, when your feet are in line with the door you are losing your energy at night and your energy gets weaker, since it is not properly directed . If you can’t avoid it, use a footboard or other piece of furniture at the foot of your bed to act as a buffer {this is when the one exception to Feng Shui’s “no footboard” rule applies}.

Lastly, leave enough room around the bed for energy to flow freely, and for each partner to get up with ease.

What are your design challenges in the bedroom? Let me know your design concern in the comments.

A Posh New Year’s Eve Entertaining Tablescape

New Year’s Eve is one of my favorite holidays and the perfect excuse to set a festive table. Whether you are hosting a dinner party for 20 or preparing a romantic dinner for two, a perfectly set table will set the tone for the entire night.

My White & Metallic tablescape was featured in Tampa Bay METRO magazine December/January 2014 Holiday Entertaining Inspirational Settings pages.

Metallics mixed with Black + White is an elegant and classic combination for this yearly celebration. Mix various size vases down the center of your table, filling some with silver beads, others with noise makers or curled ribbon. To keep the floral minimal as well use only one or two colors per vase.

Don’t be afraid to mix your plate patterns, especially if they have metallic accents. Pull it all together with a solid black napkin wrapped in silver beaded garland.
