Strawberry Bread { #FLStrawberry + #SundaySupper }

The recipe for this fruit-swirled quick bread calls for fresh Florida Strawberries and is perfect for your holiday entertaining menu or a homemade holiday gift. Try a cream cheese spread as a delicious side for this Strawberry Bread Recipe.

I must admit growing up in the Northeast I, like many living in the northern states, think of strawberries as a summer fruit only seasonally available in the warmer months. But did you know that American grown Florida Strawberries are available November through April. Makes you wonder why you would ever buy a strawberry not grown in the U.S. right?

So now the question is –  What tasty treats can we make year round to take advantage of this berry abundance? Luckily there is a plethora of sweet and savory strawberry recipes to be found for any winter entertaining opportunity you have to break out those beautiful Florida Strawberries.

I love this twist on a standard Strawberry Bread recipe with switching out the cinnamon for cardamon. It adds a special flavor that is wonderful for the cooler months of the holiday season.

And don’t forget all the amazing health benefits of strawberries! Strawberries and other fruits are virtually fat-free and contain no cholesterol. They are an excellent source of folic acid and a good source of potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure. PLUS strawberry skins contains both gallic and ellagic acids which many researchers believe help treat and even prevent certain forms of cancer. Learn more about the health benefits on the Florida Strawberry Website – HERE.

Update :: Over time, I have had several questions about the type of strawberries I use in my recipes. Here is a photo of the strawberries I use, fresh Florida Strawberries.

Strawberry Bread Recipe

INGREDIENTS

5 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon unsalted butter, softened, plus more for pan

1 pint fresh Florida Strawberries, rinsed, hulled, halved and mashed with a fork

1 3/4 cups whole wheat organic all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon ground cardamon

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup sugar

2 large eggs

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Butter an 8-by-4-inch loaf pan.

In a small saucepan, bring strawberries to a boil over medium heat. Cook, stirring, 1 minute. Set aside to cool.

In a medium bowl, whisk to combine flour, baking soda, cardamon, baking powder, and salt; set aside.

In a mixing bowl, with an electric mixer, cream butter, sugar, and eggs until light and fluffy. Add 1/2 of flour mixture, 1/3 cup water combine well, mix in remaining flour mixture. Fold in reserved strawberries.

Scrape batter into buttered pan, smoothing top. Bake 45 minutes, check for doneness, tent top with foil to prevent browning, cook another 15 minutes. Bread is done when a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, about 1 hour.

Cool in pan 10 minutes. Run a knife around edges; invert onto a rack to remove from pan. Reinvert; cool completely.

The Modern Relish Tray

The New Relish Tray AnAppealingPlan.com by @KraylFunch

What exactly is a relish tray? Why should I serve a relish tray at my next entertaining opportunity?

{speaking of entertaining… Let’s connect on instagram and share our entertaining images!}

If you were born in the last 20 years, you may not have had the experience of Grandmom’s relish tray, but this vegetable filled pre-dinner plate, once popular, is making its way back into our gatherings, especially for entertaining during the holiday season.

The beauty of this tray is the combination of flavors, the fresh crisp vegetables {carrots, radish}, the pickled { gherkins, cucumbers} and the brine {olives} . It’s a great starter for any meal and it resists being to rich and spoiling your appetite.

SUGGESTIONS FOR A MODERN RELISH TRAY

radish
carrots
celery
olives
gerkins
pickles
baked pita chips

Also classically served on a relish tray, is a spread or dip of some sort such as creamy pimento cheese, herb veggie or in this case my Arugula Green Goddess.

ARUGULA GREEN GODDESS DRESSING

INGREDIENTS

5 cups arugula, cleaned and packed
1 cup sour cream
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1 medium garlic clove, finely chopped
1 teaspoon fresh thyme, finely chopped

METHOD

In a food processor combine arugula and sour cream. Combine until completely blended. Add salt, lemon juice, garlic and thyme. Blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Allow to sit for at least 30 minutes or overnight to let the flavors combine.

Serve cold.

Did you have a relish tray in your house growing up? Have you served one lately? Tell me about it in the comments.

Food & Wine Conference Orlando July 2013

Food & Wine Conference Header #AnAppealingPlan

New Food & Wine Conference in Orlando.

To Educate, Inspire, Connect Industry Professionals

TV Chef and Cookbook Author Sara Moulton Headlines

Full Menu of “Foodie” Talent Scheduled to Speak

Technology has changed the wine-and-dine game dramatically. The smart food industry professional of the digital age must be social-media savvy to tap into the now limitless potential to grow and thrive.

To help those with a vested interest to get there, Sunday Supper LLC introduces the new Food & Wine Conference, July 19-21 at Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando. The cutting-edge summit will bring together bloggers, small-business owners, marketing professionals, winemakers, chefs and other key players to teach and learn about making the most of online opportunities to grow their businesses.

Food bloggers and others with online outlets in particular will gain insight into search engine optimization, social media marketing, food photography, effective writing and networking with others in the wine-and-dine industry.

Headlining the event is chef, television personality and cookbook author Sara Moulton. Moulton recently kicked off her third season as host of public television’s “Sara’s Weeknight Meals.” As a protégée of Julia Child, founder of the New York Women’s Culinary Alliance, executive chef of Gourmet magazine, food editor of ABC-TV’s ”Good Morning America” and the host of several popular shows on the Food Network during that channel’s first decade, this teacher at heart has kept her mission the same for decades:  to help the home cook get dinner on the table.

The conference is the brainchild of Isabel Laessig, Tampa, Fla., whose Sunday Supper Movement on Twitter @FamilyFoodie was started in 2011 and currently has more than 2 million followers. “I started the Sunday Supper Movement when my oldest daughter left for college,” said Isabel. “Before she left, I asked her what she would miss most about home.  Her answer: ‘The time we spend in the kitchen.  I can’t imagine not being here for Sunday Supper.’  It really spoke to me to realize that my 18-year-old’s fondest memories were the ones we created in the kitchen. I started my blog the day after she left and started tweeting about our family’s #SundaySupper every Sunday and a movement began.”

As the Sunday Supper Movement grew, Isabel also befriended many bloggers and others in social media who were interested in how she started the movement and in learning more in general about how to make their various businesses a success. She created the Food & Wine Conference as a way to bring these bloggers and experts together to network and learn.

Additional top pros scheduled to share expertise at the conference are: Michael Green, one of America’s premiere wine and spirits celebrities who has been an expert for 19 years for Gourmet magazine and whose expertise is regularly sought for national news segments; Rosen Shingle Creek Executive Pastry Chef David Ramirez, captain of the 2009 USA Team to the internationally acclaimed Coupe du Monde chocolate and pastry competition in France; and Jaden Hair, food blogger at Steamy Kitchen and chef with a monthly cooking show on Daytime TV.

Attendees will learn the ins and outs of a variety of food business subjects, from how to write a cookbook to food blogging, networking, promotional strategies and business planning. There also will be food samples, live chocolate demonstrations and social networking events to mix plenty of pleasure with the lively and diverse business at hand.

MVP Bloody Mary Bar

Bloody Mary’s are a tradition in my family, a staple at all our get togethers.  I remember Sunday Brunch’s with various pitchers of fresh homemade mix on my Grandparents kitchen counter. My Aunts & Uncles pouring a tall glass and adding dashes of this, splashes of that, a few of these then stirring it all together with a tall stick of celery.

When I was able to move from the “virgin” version to a true “adult” version I began to learn that Bloodies vary not only family to family but geographically as well, with each person in need of a different sauce, powder or vegetable to complete it. And so the beauty of the Bloody Mary Bar is born. Each guest has the opportunity to select what they like, leave out what they don’t and perhaps try something new.

Setting up the perfect display takes a little planning and preparation but once set up the work is done. For tailgating I recommend using various sized tubs that can be filled with ice. Keeping everything in one place, cold and making for easy clean up once the game begins. Labels on bottles & vessels not only look great but come in handy to help friends mix as they wish and doesn’t require you to stand guard answering questions about what each element may be {unless you want to of course}. They can easily be made on your computer or purchased in various remade themes.

The below are my favorite items to choose from but feel free to add to you and your guests preference. Be sure to provide additional clean ice, glasses, straws, small wooden stirring spoons, and cocktail napkins.
